The One Word That Changed Everything for Buffett and Gates

Yesterday, when I made the announcement about starting Y Realty I had a great conversation with an agent that remind me of this great story I once told on stage:

In the late 20th century, two of the world’s most influential minds sat down for a simple dinner in Seattle. Warren Buffett, known as the Oracle of Omaha, and Bill Gates, the tech visionary, seemed an unlikely pair. Yet here they were, brought together on this crisp autumn evening, where a single question would reveal the secret to their incredible success.

As the meal went on, filled with casual conversation, Bill Gates Sr., the evening’s host, sensed the moment to ask a question burning in his mind. As dessert was served, he leaned forward and asked, What do you believe is the most important factor behind your success?”

The table grew silent. All eyes shifted to Buffett and Gates, both of whom had changed entire industries. What profound answers would they share? Would it be about complex strategies or deep financial insights?

Both men spoke at the same time, uttering a single, shared answer: “Focus.”

Their response was simple, but its impact was profound. For Buffett, focus meant concentrating on a few key investments, studying them deeply, and making decisions that others often overlooked. His focus turned small investments into enormous returns.

For Gates, focus was about one goal: putting a computer on every desk and in every home. This clarity of purpose fueled his innovation and drove Microsoft to become a global powerhouse.

That evening, one thing became clear: Focus wasn’t just a tool; it was the secret to their success. It gave them the ability to see clearly and act decisively, while others were distracted by noise and uncertainty.

But here’s the thing: improving focus is a skill. It comes down to practicing the ability to stay with something longer than most people would. It’s about continuing when others give up, pushing past discomfort, distractions, and setbacks. Both Buffett and Gates mastered this—dedicating years to their goals, long after many might have moved on.

The story of that dinner and the lesson learned there is a reminder to all of us: What could you achieve if you truly focused on what matters most and committed to staying with it?

As you navigate your own path, consider the wisdom of these two titans. Maybe the key to your next breakthrough is as simple as focusing on what really counts—and sticking with it, long after others have given up.

What will you focus on today?
