Tristan’s 7+1: What I'm reading, watching, listening to, etc...

Discover the core of human motivation! Dive into the five essential human needs: from our basic survival necessities to the pursuit of reaching our fullest potential. Understand what drives actions and shapes behaviors. Unlock the secret to enhancing individual well-being and fostering a harmonious society.

The five basic human needs encompass the foundational elements necessary for our well-being and survival. These include physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization.

Firstly, physiological needs refer to our fundamental requirements like air, water, food, and shelter—without which life itself would be imperiled. Once these are met, our quest for safety, both physically and emotionally, emerges. This is closely followed by our innate desire for love and belonging, manifesting in our relationships and connections with others. Esteem needs revolve around the recognition, respect, and appreciation we seek from peers, leading us to value our own self-worth.

Lastly, self-actualization embodies our quest to reach our full potential, tapping into our deepest talents and aspirations. It’s imperative to understand and recognize these needs, for they underpin the motivations and behaviors of every individual. By ensuring these needs are met, we not only enhance individual well-being but also contribute to the harmony and prosperity of society at large.

Book I’m Reading:

Ikigai. This was a pleasant read. It’s also a quick read. What does ikigai mean? Ikigai is a Japanese concept that means your 'reason for being. ' 'Iki' in Japanese means 'life,' and 'gai' describes value or worth. Your ikigai is your life purpose or your bliss. It's what brings you joy and inspires you to get out of bed every day. The book dives into living a long and purposeful life, through data collected from people who have lived well into 100+.

What I’m Watching:

YouTube Is Changing: This was a great video from a person who doesn’t have a lot of followers on YouTube, but his video hits on the point of what’s next with YouTube.

What I’m Listening To:

Mastering Attention: Everyone wants to be more productive, but the typical advice for focusing and getting things done isn’t realistic. For example, a common tip people cling to is, “Put your phone down most of the day, even while having dinner and right before bed.” But it’s not that simple in this era of TikTokers, digital nomads and LinkedIn influencers. A smartphone, no matter how addictive, equals opportunity. People use them to make content, get brand deals, find a job and more. This interview with Nir Eyal was last year, and it was awesome.

What I Just Bought:

Leather Journal. Paper Republic is by far my favorite journal cover company on the planet. I keep on going back to them because I love the way the journals look and especially now that they have a costum option for creating your own journal. If you haven’t checked them out you may want to splurge on one of these for the holidays.

Article I’m Reading:

It’s Time To Define Your Company’s Principles. Companies need to develop strong guiding principles that go beyond generic mission statements and values, the authors argue. Well-articulated principles can provide direction for difficult decisions, especially in times of disruption. They should offer behavioral guardrails and be distinctive to the company, open to debate, transferable across the organization, and integral to its mission. Some strong principles include “Focus on the user and all else will follow” (Google), “Privacy is a fundamental human right” (Apple), and “We won’t release a product until we would use it ourselves” (Tableau Software). The authors recommend that leaders begin by identifying what makes the company unique and involving employees at all levels. When communicating decisions, they should reference principles to demonstrate their relevance. Over time, principles can shape company culture and empower employees to make decisions that align with corporate strategy. In this era of complexity and uncertainty, well-defined principles can provide much-needed clarity and direction.

What Tech I’m Testing Out:

Durable. This is a crazy website that allows you to build out websites with AI in a matter of seconds. It’s good, not GREAT, but a good start. If you’re looking to build out a simple site this might be a good place to start.

What I’m Working On:
